You know you're in Japan when...

~ Voice class is moved to the kids classroom, and your boss says, nah, don't worry about rustling up some chairs, and sure enough, your adult students waltz in, remove their shoes and plop happily down on the floor, ready for their English lesson!

~ you pull into a petrol station, and before you can get out of the car, 3 staff come running up - one to fill your tank, one to take your money and one to wash your windscreen, then they even run out on the road to stop the traffic so you can get out again!

~ a customer comes into work right on closing time, and instead of being asked to leave, the staff sit down and discuss the customer's needs for 45 min (unpaid overtime, of course).

Those are pretty funky aspects of Japanese culture! Especially the floor-sitting. Did you as the teacher get to sit on the floor as well?

That's cool. They seem to show so much respect in their culture (or are just very hungry for business). I wish people would stop traffic for me!

Yep, I sure do sit on the floor! I have heard of teachers taking a chair in, but that would feel really weird and rude to me!

And as for the service, Aussies may have the saying - the customer is always right, but I think Japan must have a saying somewhere that the customer is some kind of god!

I like some of that but the petrol thing is not cool! I hate going to a petrol station and having someone fill up 4 me. :( I'm a control lover...

LOL - I love it when someone else fills up for me and saves me having to get out of my cosy car! Filling up with petrol is a nasty chore - hate the fumes.
